The Community Health Initiative (CHI) is focused on improving health and education in rural tribal areas. On the health front, the CHI effort embodies a holistic approach to better health and disability prevention. CHI caters to the 7 Tribal Blocks in Palghar District, Maharashtra, which has a population of 30,00,000. CHI's projects address diverse target group groups from pregnant and lactating mothers through infants, children to adolescents.
CHI undertakes the following activities:
  • Early detection and treatment of disabilities
  • Health and Nutrition Education
  • Preventive health through clinical interventions
  • Empowerment of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Village Health, Sanitation & Nutrition Committees
  • Revival and refurbishment of Anganwadis
  • Triple-AAA capacity building (ASHA, AWW & ANM)
  • Community-Based Events

Following the success of CHI, IIF has now adopted the most vulnerable Tribal Block - Mokhada - which has a population of one lakh tribals.

CHI has three projects underway currently:
Janani

Launched in February 2020, this project monitors 1,600 pregnant tribal women and their newborns to control malnutrition. Growth is monitored for five years using a digital app. The project will end in January 2025.

Anganwadi Early Childhood Education

Launched in April 2022, this project aims to give a headstart to tribal children (aged 3 to 6 years) in Anganwadis and at home in Mokhada Block by improving their physical, emotional and mental development. The project envisages a structural upgrade of Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) by providing a conducive learning environment to pre-school children and curriculum inputs to stimulate and promote motor skills and cognitive development. IIF provides training by experts to Anganwadi Sevikas and volunteers.

COVID-19 Prevention & Control - Trace, Treat & Track

From June 2021, during the pandemic, an AI-integrated COVID-19 surveillance software platform was customised by IIF and used to trace, track and treat Covid patients. IIF reached out to 1 lakh Tribals to help detect and control COVID-19 and promote nutrition and personal hygiene. It sent door-to-door teams equipped with protective gear and tablet devices to screen residents using digital thermometers and oximeters. The teams also tested blood pressure & sugar levels for treatment and timely referrals to control morbidity and mortality. IIF mobilised 75% of the Mokhada population to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and also generated awareness on COVID Appropriate Behaviour (CAB) with the help of 100 local college students.
