When the earthquake struck Gujarat on January 26 2001, with the Government Hospital reduced to rubble and not enough surgical facilities available, The Lifeline Express arrived as a Godsend.
It responded with speed and alacrity to offer medical and modern surgical interventions free of cost to earthquake victims by arriving at Gandhidham on February 6,2001.
The train offered a modern, well-equipped hospital on rails consisting of four coaches having three operating tables with facilities for anesthesia, laboratory tests and x-rays.
At the request of the WHO and the Government of Gujarat the Lifeline Express was positioned in Anjar for an indefinite period and worked in collaboration with the Government Civil Hospital, Anjar.

The Lifeline Express was stationed in Anjar, Gujarat, for an indefinite period. It functioned as a central hospital, where others lay in ruins, offering a vital service.
It’s presence generated confidence and reassured the people of Anjar, Rambag, and the surrounding villages that in case of an emergency, they would be medically and professionally served.
