Emergency Helpline
(A part of Community Health Initiative)

UNICEF’s recent report confirms that:
  • One woman dies every 5 minutes from pregnancy-related complications.
  • About 3,50,000 children are orphaned every year because of the high maternal mortality rate.
  • There has been no reduction in maternity deaths in India in the last 10 years.
  • The maternal mortality ratio here is as high as 670 deaths per 100,000 births.
  • Pregnant women are often taken on fruit carts even as they are in labour and most of them die before they can be attended to.

In order to facilitate more pregnant women to go to the community health centres and hospitals instead of delivering at home, Impact suggests:
  1. An arrangement be made with the Auto rickshaw association at taluka or district level, to rush a vehicle in case of an emergency. IIF can fix a rate card for the transporters and could consider reimbursing them this amount.
  2. A helpline number is another initiative to reach help to women on time. IIF could ensure that the women get prompt attention in government-run-hospitals and community healthcare centres.
