The Lifeline Express

A Cleft-Free area in Maharashtra, covering a population of over a million
(A part of Community Health Initiative)

Background:
Impact India has embarked on an ambitious three-year Community Health Initiative (CHI) in the tribal areas of Thane District in Maharashtra. It aims to reduce by 50% the incidence of future disabilities through preventive measures and by 50% existing disabilities through corrective surgeries.

The Aim:
Within CHI, to rid the entire area (population over one million) of cleft patients (about 1200 persons), using existing referral hospitals and infrastructure – either private or the Government.

Objectives:
  • To provide quality cleft surgeries free of cost to the beneficiaries.
  • To expand the coverage of cleft services to the underserved areas.
  • To reduce the backlog of clefts by identifying and providing services to the affected population.

The Plan:
In institutionalising the correction of clefts, steps are being taken to
  • Identify cleft cases and prepare a village-wise cleft registry through local bodies like Panchayats, Mahila Madals, community groups, health workers, teachers, anganwadi workers, youth clubs, volunteers etc.
  • Organise camps for arranging referral services.
  • Motivate and transport cleft cases to the base hospital for free surgeries through grassroot NGOs, peripheral health staff, link workers and village community.
  • To follow up operated cases.
